Welcome Lu,
I haven't completely decided what I'm making but I did go get some yarn for inspiration.
Don't feel like you have to use the charts, you could certainly work a yellow scarf or work with yellow ribbon yarn or any other idea that comes to mind. Additionally, others have posted some great options for using your knitting to make items for people effected by the war. Check the sidebar and see if anything there appeals to you :)

I'm working up a scarf idea. An interesting texture with eyelets so I can run a yellow ribbon through the eyelets.

Does anyone know of any place as another option that we could donate items to who would auction them off or something? There are a bunch of things I would like to make, but don't think that anyone in Afghanistan or Iraq or any of the troops would actually like them or use them.

Miriam, that is a great idea to have an auction of some kind to raise money for a charity. Have no idea how to make it come about, but it would be cool!

I still haven't decided what to make.

I believe that e-bay lets you auction off stuff and donate proceeds to different charities. I think the program is called "giving works." However, you have to be registered with e-bay as a seller and register with another place that manages the donation.
